Stress isn’t just in your head…
it’s in your hormones, gut and nervous system too
If you’ve been told to “just relax” and you wanted to roll your eyes and walk away… same. I get it. But stress isn’t just a mindset of “Oh I am so busy, I have SO MUCH I need to do today”, it’s affecting your ability to sleep properly, digest food, recover, exercise and hormone regulation. The more annoying part is that even if you feel like your life is fine, your body can still feel like it’s being chased by a tiger, in fight response.
What’s going on inside your body?
When our brains detect pressure or threat, it flips into survival mode. Your stress response will typically include:
Increased cortisol and adrenaline, making energy levels lower in the morning and higher in the evening
Blood flow is prioritised to muscles, not digestion
Blood sugar regulation is altered, causing cravings and energy crashes
Gut motility changes - constipation, bloating, diarrhoea
Disrupted sleep hormones
Increased inflammation throughout the body, if prolonged
All of these are annoying ‘little symptoms’ but after a while can severely change your quality of life.
A simple 60 second reset you can do today:
Try this before meals to tell your body you are safe - digestion likes to know it is safe.
Put one hand on your chest and one on your belly
Inhale through the nose for 4 seconds
Exhale slowly for 6-8 seconds
Repeat for 5 rounds
